Job Post: Safety Manager

Zululand Anthracite Colliery would like to recruit a Safety Manager to be based at the mine.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required to be appointed:

  • National Diploma Safety Management

  • COMSOC 1, 2 - not negotiable

  • Grade 12

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office.

  • Must have 5 to 10 years of experience in safety management position

Advantageous:

  • In possession of a Blasting Certificate – Advantageous

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversight of the area’s medical surveillance, that it is up to date and implemented on all sites;

  • Ensure that all employees have attended the required induction programmes on all the sites in the area;

  • Ensure that all legal appointments are completed and that the personnel are authorized to operate on all the sites in the area;

  • Liaise with training to Ensure that the training matrix is updated and that the training is on schedule;

  • Assist with hazard identification and risk assessments;

  • Oversee planned task observations (PTO) programs in his / her area;

  • Oversee mini-risk assessments done in his / her area;

  • Assist with behavioural (at risk) monitoring of employees;

  • Oversee pre-start check lists done in his / her area;

  • Do site over inspect the site’s safety personnel’s inspections;

  • Oversee the arrangement of safety talks and topics;

  • Ensure firefighting teams are being trained;

  • Ensure that the sites maintain a high level of good housekeeping in his / her area;

  • Ensure adhere to the compliance of the hazardous chemical register on sites;

  • Test the comprehension of employees understanding company standards and procedures;

  • Collate all daily safety report and compile a month safety report for the area

  • Ensure the testing of site emergency procedures;

  • Collate the incident register for the sites in the area;

  • Collate the statistics of all sites under his / her control;

  • Ensure that all workman’s compensation forms are correctly filled in;

  • Implement safety initiatives required by the specific site’s Mine Management;

  • Investigate and evaluate causes of any accidents and incidents on the sites;

  • Coordinate and control the activities of the Health and Safety committee;

  • Coordinate all safety training for the sites in area; and

  • Enforce safety, health and environmental integrity principles on all sites.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ethical, pragmatic and approachable with excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Facilitation and good report writing skills

  • Must be literate in Microsoft Office

  • In possession of a valid driver's licence.

  • Must be able to adapt his / her plans to suite any changes occurring on the sites.

  • Conveys information to individuals, ensure that they understand.

  • Continuous improvement: Innovating ways to deal with safety related work problems.

  • Must take decisions on how to cope with changing environments with in the workplaces on the various sites.

  • Take initiative in solving safety-based problems.

  • Must be able to manage any conflict that occurs between the various site’s personnel and the Safety Personnel of those sites.

  • Setting objectives and targets for the safety issues on the sites in his / her area.

  • The sites that he / she is responsible must show very low accident and incident rates, with the personnel on the sites showing a good knowledge of the COPs, policies, procedures, safe work practices and site safety instructions.

  • Be proactive, take prompt action.

  • Where there may be problems of a safety nature on any particular site, he / she must attempt to solve those issues before enlisting help from any other source.

  • Must be driven to see the sites in his / her area of responsibility must show a policy of zero tolerance and have extremely low injury frequency rates.

  • Safety: Driving solutions by focusing on the achievement of results by staying with a position,

  • Must be able to supervise the activities of the sub-ordinates reporting to him / her.

  • Work standards: Setting high standards of performance for self and others; assuming responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments or tasks; self-imposing standards of excellence rather than having standards imposed.

  • General Health and Safety Must be able to implement, inspect and change to adapt to the working environment.

  • Must be aware of the requirements on the area and implement and generate new procedures

  • Must be able to lead an investigation team and identify the causes of any accidents / incidents and implement proper preventative control measures.

  • Essential, must have completed this course

  • Must be completely computer literate and self-reliant.

  • Must have an advanced literacy Microsoft Office suite.

  • Must have completed Level 1 and must be up to date.

  • Must be able to handle fire extinguishers and understand the thermal triangle principles.
