ZAC resources were discovered in 1981 by Transnatal Coal & Utah Mining JV and developed in 1985 by BHP Billiton. Mining operations started in 1987. The Mine is located on the border of the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, about 100km from Richards Bay in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The closest town is Ulundi.
