About ZAC

ZAC is the sole producer of prime anthracite in South Africa.

ZAC’s unique high qualities are the highest-ranking, lowest ash and lowest volatile anthracite produced in South Africa.

The superior quality attributed to each product from ZAC places it in a unique and favoured position as a supplier of reductants to the metallurgical industry. ZAC’s consistent quality and secure production make us a sought-after supplier to key markets. ZAC’s location, being close to Richards Bay, positions us well for both exports and to service the local South African markets.

ZAC is in Emakhalathini, about 100 km from Richards Bay in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The closest town is Ulundi.

ZAC resources were discovered in 1981 by Transnatal Coal & Utah Mining JV and developed in 1985 by BHP Billiton. Mining operations started in 1987. Prior to Menar’s acquisition of ZAC in 2016, the mine was at different stages owned by BHP Billiton (from 1985), Riversdale Mining (from 2005) and Rio Tinto (from 2011).

ZAC is a ‘One Stop Shop’ for anthracite which has all the facilities to size and blend products according to market needs. ZAC has sufficient capacity and access to rail for export and transport to local and international consumers. ZAC is the preferred supplier to key industrial clients in the South African and international markets. Furthermore, we have ambitions to become a larger player in the international and domestic anthracite market offering exceptional service, consistency, and quality.
